Standing (Alone) at Sinai: Stories of Conversion, Here and in Israel
On Shavuot, we read the book of Ruth, the classic story of conversion to Judaism. For millennia, converts have drawn inspiration and direction from Ruth’s famous declaration: “Your people are my people, your God is my God.”

But today, for many converts, things are more complicated. In 2023, most of us think of identity, including Jewish identity, not so much as binary but as being on a spectrum. So, what does it mean for Judaism when our ancient terminology no longer applies fully to our contemporary reality?

Join guest scholar Rabbi Joshua Weisberg, an orthodox rabbi, raised Reform Jewish by his Catholic mother and Jewish father, as he addresses questions of contemporary Jewish identity. Rabbi Josh will screen a short film he made about a young Israeli woman who recently converted, and he will speak about his own experience with conversion and Jewish identity. Following the film, we will invite two members of our community who have gone through conversion to share some of their experiences.
