Rational Judaism (Beyt Knesset)
Tuesday, January 13, 2015 • 22 Tevet 5775
7:30 PM - 9:00 PMA Philosophy of Hebrew Thinking
led by Rabbi Ari Cartun
A FREE* exploration of the questions:
How does Jewish thought hold up to philosophical critique?
How much of what we do Jewishly is sensible, and how much is anti-sense?
Jewish thinkers have tried to answer these questions for 3000 years, both for themselves and for their students. Some Jewish thinkers have focused mostly on Judaism, and some are known mostly for their contributions to general philosoply. Some non-Jewish philosophers have had as much influence on Judaism as Jewish ones have. We'll cast a wide net, introducing personalities, concepts, and questions, as well as ways to continue searching for philosophical answers to spiritual and ethical questions.
No prior formal study of philosophy is necessary. But it wouldn't hurt.
Questions we will consider include:
How do we know what we know?
What / what says so, and who / what are they to say so?
What is an individual s0ul / mind / b0dy?
How do we talk about "G0d"?
What is meaningful? Beautiful?
What is right? For whom? And when?
