Privacy Workshop (Double Tree)

Sunday, June 2, 2013 24 Sivan 5773

1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Internet Privacy Workshp

This event is a practical, hands-on introduction to the most basic encryption programs on your own computer. These programs--along with new habits that we will try to teach you--can make your computer files and your Internet transactions more private. We volunteers will help you one-on-one and in small groups. We will help you choose, download, install, and configure several programs. We will give you a simple explanation of how each program works. We will not discuss the mathematics that make the cryptography work. If you are interested in the math or the programming, we will show you reading lists.

Topics
  • Learn how to create a strong password that is easy to remember.
  • Make your Web browser more secure with Https Everywhere and other add-ons. See fixtracking.com
  • Encrypt files and directories on your computer with Truecrypt.
  • Encrypt your email with GPGThunderbird, and Enigmail.
  • Use the Web anonymously by hiding your IP address, using Tor.
  • Encrypt instant messaging with Cryptocat.
  • Learn how to buy things on line more privately.
  • Learn alternatives to Google.
  • Learn how opening your wireless network to strangers can, paradoxically, give you more privacy.
  • Other cool stuff.
Suggestions
Please bring your laptop computer. We will get all the encryption programs running on your own laptop. Invite your friends.

A Family Event
We hope that your middle school and high school students come, too. They live so much of their lives on their computers and the Internet that they should know how to protect their files and conversations.

Our Goals
We love the invention and sharing that people do with computers and the Internet. However, we dislike bullies. We also dislike snoops. We want people to understand new threats to their privacy that let bullies and snoops be unpleasant to them. To us, privacy means that you--and not other people-- get to decide to whom you reveal different parts of your life. We also want people to learn how, by working together, we can protect one another and make the world a more beautiful place.

Head Start
If you'd like to start learning basic encryption, start with the manual that we are using. It is the CryptoParty Handbook. You may also like the CryptoParty Web site.
