Nora's Will (Cinco Dias Sin Nora)

Nora's Will is an award-winning Mexican black comedy about how the desire to reconcile with dead loved ones is both powerful and universal.

When he discovers his ex-wife dead in her apartment at the beginning of the film, José initially seems immune to that impulse. Surprised more than saddened, he stays to supervise the funeral out of a sense of duty until his adult son Rubén can return from a business trip.

As Passover is about to start, the burial has to be delayed. Nora must remain in her flat a few days longer, accompanied by José, a devout soul to watch over the body, and some dry ice.

The other complication is that Nora overdosed on pills. The rabbi is willing to overlook her suicide and allow a traditional burial in a Jewish cemetery, but José — who despises religion, rules and hypocrisy — refuses to invent a false cause of death.

This mess might seem like bad luck except for the opening sequence of Nora cooking in the kitchen leaving notes and photos in her desk, making clear that Nora knew exactly what she was doing and what the effects would be.

Nora’s Will is a complex and well-written film, which quietly pokes fun while not making anything or anyone look foolish.
