Mitzvah Singers Rehearsal (Rm. 18)
Thursday, March 14, 2013 • 3 Nisan 5773
7:30 PM - 9:00 PMWhat is the Mitzvah Singers?
The Mitzvah Singers is devoted to bringing Jewish music and comfort to members of our Etz community who are in need. We are a new branch of the Mitzvah Chavurah.
There are about 20 of us so far. We enjoy making music together as well as taking one of our Congregation’s wonderful strengths – singing – on the road to bring joy to family and friends of our Congregation who are either in the hospital, in hospice, recovering at home, or living in a local Senior Center. We are focused on Jewish scores (both in Hebrew and English, both traditional and modern), and we are also including three part harmony arrangements of songs *by* Jews (like Leonard Cohen, Irving Berlin, Rogers and Hammerstein, Bob Dylan, etc).
This effort was inspired when some of us performed multi-part arrangements with Kol B’Seder for their Debbie Freedman tribute concert at Etz last January. Also, some of us sang for a congregant in a local rehab hospital and saw how much she and others in that facility loved hearing our Hannukah music. Our service to others takes two forms:
(1) Full group performances at hospitals or senior facilities, starting out at a pace of 2-3 concerts per year, with few rehearsals prior to each concert so everyone can learn a repertoire of songs with multipart arrangements.
· 1st concert: Sunday March 24, 2:30 – 3:30 pm at Palo Alto Commons, where a congregant’s mom lives. We’ll include some Passover songs and sing-alongs.
· Spring Rehearsals @ Etz: 7:30 – 9pm, Thurs. Feb 21, and March 7, 14 and 21. Also, 1:15pm – 2:15pm, Sunday, March 24 (also at Etz) before nearby concert.
· We may do one more Spring concert (perhaps the weekend after Passover starts)
· No date or location yet for our Fall 2013 performance (perhaps around what will be a very early Hanukkah, which starts the day before Thanksgiving this year)!
(2) Small group, ad hoc bedside singing (about 30 minutes per visit)
· You can do as few or as many of these as your schedule allows (we only need 3 – 4 people out of our full group of about 20 each time).
· When a request comes in to sing at the bedside of an Etz Chayim community member (e.g. through the Mitzvah Chavurah or mitzvahsingers@etzchayim.org), we’ll rustle up a small group of musicians who can go at the requested time/date.
JOIN US! Do you enjoy singing, or know some other adult or teen who does? Interested in singing beautiful music with a fun group? Are you pretty sure you can sing on key in a multipart arrangement (reading music is not a requirement, but is helpful)? The Mitzvah Singers welcomes you! We are also open to knowing who else might be interested in helping accompany us on keyboard or guitar. We especially need more MALE singers, because many of the arrangements have a men’s part needing adequate coverage, both in concerts and at bedside sings. Email us at mitzvahsingers@etzchayim.org. Thanks!
