Sunday, May 15, 2022 • 14 Iyyar 5782
10:00 AM - 12:00 PMJeffrey Werbock will explain and demonstrate the ancient, sacred, traditional music of Azerbaijan known as mugham on indigenous instruments: kamancha, tar, and oud. Jeffrey will also share with us about the Jews of Azerbaijan with stories about his experiences in Azerbaijan as an American Jewish man.
As a teenager Jeffrey aspired to be a composer. When he discovered Azerbaijani mugham music at the age of 21, he shifted his focus from composition to learning this tradition on native string instruments, kamancha (bowed) and tar (plucked). That was in 1972. Since then he has performed in hundreds of venues in the US, Canada, England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel and Azerbaijan. He made a documentary film about the talented children singers of Azerbaijani mugham music, entitled Young Voices, Ancient Song.
