ETZ Talk: What is Jewish Magic? The Curious Case of the Mezuzah w/ Yosef Rosen, PhD (virtual)
Sunday, February 7, 2021 • 25 Shevat 5781
10:00 AM - 12:00 PMVirtualMagic continues to fascinate and mystify us, even today. One result of modern disenchantment, however, is the belief that religion is rational and magic is superstitious, and, therefore, Judaism is free of magic. This class will reexamine what Jewish magic is (it's not pulling dreidels out of thin air!) and whether it's something we truly wish to shed as superstition. We will look at the history of the Mezuzah—its original purpose and later medieval magical versions—as a way to clearly approach the question of what magic can still offer us today.
