Here's what you need to know about assigning Aliyot to family and friends :
- The family may assign all but two aliyot.
Those two will be assigned by the rabbi to other congregants for reasons important to the congregation.
- Parent(s) should have the last blessing before the maftir when their child will have her/his blessing.
This will be the seventh, or the hosafah (additional), or acharonah (last), depending on whether we have added aliyot per your request.
- Etz Chayim does not require anyone, male or female, to wear a kippah or tallit in services, whether in the congregation or at the bimah.
- The list of Torah readers is on our website.
- Torah blessings may be said or sung in Hebrew or English.

Those who cannot read Hebrew competently should do it in Englsh.
Torah blessings can be downloaded in text or audio format.
Non-Jews and Torah honors
- Etz Chayim endorses Jewish tradition that only adult Jews may meaningfully say,
"Wh0 has chosen us " and "Wh0 has commanded us."
- Torah blessings have these phrases, so they must be led by an adult (over 13) Jew,
which is why they are central to becoming bart/mitzvah.
- Others , non-adults or non-Jews, may also participate in the blessing as long as
at least one person saying the blessing is an Adult Jew.
- Non-Jewish parents and grandparents may help open the ark and pass the Torah down the chain of tradition
to the Bar/t Mitzvah, because a child does receive Torah from all her/his relatives, even those who are not Jewish.
- Non-Jews may not do Hagbahah or Glilah, as this a non-verbal statement of Jewish committment to our Torah.
- Kids may do G'lilah.
- Remember, these are supposed to be "honors," so non-Jewish (or Jewish) relatives/friends should not be
coerced into an act that seems inauthentic to them, or which they cannot do well.
ALL THOSE WHO MAY LEAD THE BLESSING ARE CALLED BY THEIR "HEBREW" NAME.
IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A HEBREW NAME, WE CALL THEM BY THEIR ENGLISH NAMES, IN "HEBREW STYLE:"
e.g., John ben Tom v'Mary
Below is a sample page to view, but too small to print out.
Instead, download either
an Excel Spreadsheet, if you want to type in the names,
or a PDF file if you just wish to write the names in by hand.
