| The Congregation was organized in early 1995 and now has about 275 households. We chose our name as a sign of commitment to Judaism, our community, and the past. The Torah is an Etz Chayim - a "Tree of Life" providing strength to all who hold it tightly.
Congregation Etz Chayim is an independent, liberal congregation that emphasizes spirituality and actively involves its members of all ages in a communal experience of worship, learning, and service.
We are independent, and have chosen not to affiliate with any Jewish movement, because we seek the challenge of building our own traditions within the broadest parameters of Judaism.
We identify ourselves as liberal because:
|
We recognize Judaism as an evolving religion, a "living tree" that encourages the creation of new traditions as it respects the old. |
|
We are an egalitarian and inclusive community. We invite and encourage participation by all who identify themselves as Jews, and those with whom they share their lives, without regard to gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. Interfaith couples and families are welcome within our congregational community. |
We seek ongoing opportunities to enhance our level of understanding of Jewish practice, philosophy, ethics and history through lifelong learning.
